How to Split Excel Sheets into Separate Files

Updated: May 3, 2026

Managing large Excel files can be a headache. Whether you have a workbook with 50 sheets or a database with hundreds of thousands of rows, learning how to split them efficiently is a crucial skill.

Method 1: Split by Sheet

This method is commonly used when you have monthly reports (e.g., "Jan", "Feb", "Mar") in a single file, and you need to email them to different departments.

  1. Go to MergeExcelFiles.org and select the Split Tool.
  2. Upload your multi-sheet workbook.
  3. Select the "Split by Sheets" mode.
  4. Click Split. You will receive a ZIP file containing each sheet as an individual .xlsx file.

Method 2: Split by Rows

Excel has a row limit (roughly 1 million). If you are dealing with massive CSV exports or system dumps, you'll need to break them down into smaller files (e.g., 1,000 rows each) to process them more easily.

  1. Upload your massive data file to the Split tool.
  2. Select "Split by Rows".
  3. Enter the number of rows you want in each file (e.g., 500).
  4. The tool will automatically calculate how many files are needed and generate them instantly.
